Spring knocking on the door?

by Rob on

When I walked this morning towards the train station in South Amsterdam, I realized that I heard for the first time this years birds singing. It was a merry song they were singing. As if the announced the arrival of spring.
Sure, I know that is only February and that winter can strike hard back again… but the feeling of spring coming near is very nice.
The sun… the higher tempature… trees becoming green again… flowers… young animals…
Spring brings new energy… the desire to do things again…

The signs of Spring are weak… but they are surely there…

Shameless

by Rob on

No need to spend many words. It was so wonderful to come “home” again…

Shameless (Billy Joël)

Well I’m shameless when it comes to loving you
I’d do anything you want me to
I’d do anything at all

And I’m standing here for all the world to see
There ain’t that much left of me
That has very far to fall

You know I’m not a man who has ever been
Insecure about the world I’ve been living in
I don’t break easy, I have my pride
But if you need to be satisfied

I’m shameless, baby I don’t have a prayer
Anytime I see you standing there
I go down upon my knees

And I’m changing, I swore I’d never compromise
But you convinced me otherwise
I’ll do anything you please

You see in all my life I’ve never found
What I couldn’t resist, what I couldn’t turn down
I could walk away from anyone I ever knew
But I can’t walk away from you

I have never let anything have this much control over me
Cause I worked too hard to call my life my own
Yes I made myself a world and it worked so perfectly
But it’s your world now, I can’t refuse
I never had so much to lose
I’m shameless…shameless

You know it should be easy for a man who’s strong
To say he’s sorry or admit when he’s wrong
I’ve never lost anything I ever missed
But I’ve never been in love like this…

It’s out of my hands

I’m shameless, I don’t have the power now
But I don’t want it anyhow
So I’ve got to let it go

I’m shameless, shameless as a man can be
You can make a total fool of me
I just wanted you to know

I am shameless
Shameless

Suddenly facing the past…

by Rob on

There are of those moments that you are suddenly confronted with the past… the past that goes back beyond the time you can remember.

My mother needed the code of her mobile phone. She knew it was written down somewhere. While I was looking through everything I found something. I took it along to my mother and asked her if it really was what I thought it was. With a big smile on her face she confirmed to me that it really was… a picture of me as baby. Which is very special to me, because I have no other pictures of myself as baby….

(and yes… my mother told me I was always a happy baby).

Career man

by Marion on

While waiting enjoying a cup of coffee at a gas station, I did read in a newspaper that Dutch women think that career men are the funniest and the nicest. I find that strange and I can come up with some reasons which are not a compliment for the women who think so.
First one: money! People that are true career people tend to earn a nice amount of money. For some people money means security, but is that a base for a relation? I think not. But it seems others think different.
Or maybe they like the their “hard working” men are so often from home? Because a real career man makes many hours and is a lot away from home, so they can do “their own things”, whatever that may mean and be!
And I could go on like this!

Lets discus these career man.
I see them almost daily and most of them are not my kind of people. Many show a certain arrogance about how good they are. Many conversations among them goes about showing others that they are the best.
Their jokes are often way below the line. And their “loving” wifes and partners should know how they talk about women among themselves. Not even to mention how they often flirt with the women they meet during their work. It gets at times close to disgusting!
Also consider that making a career means often changing often of job, because when a career maker gets a change to get up, he or she will take it. Specially in these times changing jobs may be a risk. And it always brings a lot of unrest and stress.
Which brings us to the next point: Most career people have problems with relaxing. They have a hard time of pushing work aside for some time. Their career is always somewhere in the back of their mind. No matter what they do.

Now, I don’t say all career men are like that, but there is a tendency.

Am I a career woman? Yes and no. Surely I did make a career, but I needed many and many years to get here where I am now. It was more a growing process then working hard on a career. So with that in mind, I don’t add myself really to the career people.

I could talk for hours about this subject because I see it from so closely almost daily. But I think I made my point of view clear.
And so I rather go for the relaxed, fun-loving and caring software engineer :)

Marion.

Java…

by Rob on

Above is the source code of a “Hello world” program in the programming language Java. It is kinda a tradition that when you start to learn a new language that the first program you make is a “Hello World”-program. A “Hello World” program is a very simple program that writes “Hello World” to the screen.

As said, this example was made in the language Java. I am learning to work in this language because we will be using it a lot in the future. We will rebuild our complete Back Office in it. A enormous task, but what a challenge…

It is nice to learn a new language… and because it is not the first programming language I ever learned, it is not too hard…. yet :)

Moderation

by Rob on

Today I have moderated a posting here on my blog. This for several reasons.

First, one look at my blog may show that the English language is required here. My none Dutch speaking friends and colleagues should be able to read what is written here. But okay, I can live with that.

Secondly, I dislike the habit of many people to post off topic to a thread. Especially when the used thread is about a serious subject as the Italian woman who spend more then 17 years in coma.

But last and most important reason, I do not allow any kind of discrimination here on my blog. The person who posted this message tried to make clear the differences between “neighborhoods with overall high educated people” and the school there and the so called lesser area’s where the “scum” (the Dutch word for this was literally used) that supposed to live in Amsterdam. And with that was pointed directly at the Moroccan youth. Yes, I do know that the Moroccan is a source of problems, but not because they are more brutal, rude and less well behaving the Dutch youth. In my experience Dutch youth is just as rude and not behaving as the Moroccan youth.
The problems mentioned are caused by other reasons (as cultural and religous ones) and are partly our own fault.

Thing is I do see both worlds. In Amsterdam I live 4 days per week in “neighborhood with lots of high educated people” (“Oud Zuid Oost” Amsterdam, close to the Vondelpark) and no, that doesn’t mean I stay away from the “lesser” areas of Amsterdam… on the contrary.
In Haaksbergen I live 3 days per week what some may called a “lesser neighborhood” with many people that are not native to our country and a rather high unemployment. With some respect and understanding there are no real problems… specially not the ones that were mentioned in the moderated post.

This moderation is definitive and can not be discussed. That is my right as owner of this blog.

(Thank you Marion for pointing me to this posting. And you know me indeed very well to see that I would not allow this on my blog).

Eluana Englaro

by Rob on

Today I heard in the news that after being for 17 years in coma Eluana Englaro passed away. Personally I am happy for her and for the people close to her.
First I think that the change that she would ever wake up again was very small. Would that ever happened, the change of her waking up without any (mental) damage is almost close to zero. And imagine, having a cap of 17 years in your life…
No, I think that it is good that she passed away peaceful like this.

It is sad that religion and politics made such a battle of it. Why? To push through their own opinions. Just wanting to make thier point over the back of others. It is close to disgusting

The Vatican pronounced that they ask those that where in favor of euthanasia will be forgiven by god. I say, I hope that humanity may forgive this religion for letting people suffer so badly…

It stroke me with complete unbelief when I read today that 18% of the Dutch women would be willing to give up the right to vote for looking younger. So looks are more important that the basic right to select the kind of government our country will lead?

Sure this research was “just” done among 750 Dutch women with an age between 45 and 60, so they result of it is not very meaningful in my opinion. But still it is shocking that about 1 of 5 women is willing to give up basic rights for some good looks.

19% of this women have considered a face lift. Again in personal opinion a face lift gives often a very unnatural result. And if I understood  it right, there are many things that can go wrong with a face lift.
This kind of correctional surgery I can only understand in case of  deformation (after an accident or disease or alike).

Sure, I love to look good. Nice clothes, a little make-up… But it saddens  me to see that women are willing give up basic rights or go through dangerous surgery just to look good.

Snow again?

by Rob on

Strange it is… Last weeks when I traveling from Haaksbergen back to Amsterdam, it is always snowing… this already for several weeks.
I mean this week we had some very nice sunny days, especially for this time of year. Days that one almost could feel the spring in the air…. Again it shows that nature does what it wants and nothing we silly humans can do about it.

Anyway, after Wierden the snow started to disappear again… to reappear in Amsterdam!

(I know the picture above is not sharp. But somehow I like the effect caused by taking this picture through the window of a riding train).
