Might & Magic

by Rob on

Yesterday I was discussing some old computer games on Facebook and the subject turned to the Might & Magic saga. I have good memories of the Might & Magic games, spend many enjoyable hour playing those games.

Without any reason I browsed the Internet a bit for Might & Magic and to my very surprise I saw that there are still games released in the Might & Magic saga. I really went “Woooaaa” and I felt how my fingers started to tickle…

So I checked “Steam”. I buy 90% or more of my games through Steam. Their system is good, their collection of games is amazing, their support is very good and they have very nice offers all the time.
And yes, “Might & Magic Heroes VI, ” (among others) showed up. The price was more then acceptable and before I knew it I was downloading and installing the game. I bought the “Might and Magic Heroes VI: Complete Edition”, which contains “Pirates of the Savage Sea”, “Danse Macabre” and “Shades of Darkness”. The last was just releases May this year.

It is very long ago that I played a “turn based” computer-game. And in the beginning it feels weird to play in such a slow manner (that after all the high action of Call of Duty, Battlefield, Dishonored and more). But after a bit is starts to feel as a very relaxed way of playing. No hurry at all. The game will wait for you.
The graphics are good, the sound effects are good. Good to fill in some lost hours :-)

The difference of 50 years….

by Rob on

Photo’s that were made a long time ago suffer by the time that is passing by. The brightness and contrast fade. The picture most likely will show traces of damage.
Luckily nowadays with our strong computers and applications as Photoshop and The Gimp, we can correct (to some level) these traces that time left behind on photo’s like this one and make it look better again.

The woman on the picture is Dorothea Gertrud Berkers-Pimpertz, my grandmother when she was a younger woman herself. Looking at her complete name, I have to wonder if my Christian name “Dorotheus” is related to her (my complete name is Robertus Dorotheus Maria Berkers). I have a feeling this assumption is correct, but as my parents both have passed away, I will never know for sure.
Sadly I have never known my grandmother. She passed away within a month before I was born (22 March 1963 and I was born on 17 April that year).

So I am really happy that my nephew Ron shared this picture and I will do my best to make the best out of that picture. Of course I will share the end result here.

Anyway, when Marion and I looked at this picture we had a funny conversation. Imagine that my grandmother, who was used to the world of 50 years ago, could see my house and surrounding area as they are now. Things have changed a lot since then. So we wondered, what would be acceptable for her and what would be complete not understandable for her. We came to the conclusion that 90% of my house would look strange to her… 40 Inc LED TV, microwave, digital camera’s, washing machine (as we have them now), electric stoves, computers and so on and on.

It is fun to think about this kind of things and talk about it…

Okay, back to processing the picture!!!

So today officially the winter of this year starts… and when I look through a window I see rain. Just a few more days and it will be Christmas and so I guess no white Christmas this year. And that is somehow a pity…

It is said that this winter we would get lots of snow. Right now it doesn’t look like that, but this is of course just the first day of the winter. Things can change a lot…

I know that there are people who would love a long cold period with lots of snow. I don’t belong to those people. Having said that, I would love a period with snow to make nice walks and to make pictures. A white world can be so beautiful. Specially when are out there early in the morning after a night of snowing. I really can look forward to that day!

The pictures in this article are made by me and they are from the time that I was living in the town of Haaksbergen.

As I already have told before, I really love the chess game. I believe I also told here before that I have played chess for several years on competition level.

For the last time I am playing chess with Sanne (a common friend of Marion and me). Sending each move by mail, text-message or Skype. Basically I have learned Sanne to play chess. And she is a clear example of a student who becomes better as the teacher. Yes, she has become a very good chess player and that makes it a challenge to play with her. That is making things of course interesting.

This weekend Sanne was visiting me to play some games of chess. Playing on distance and exchanging the moves by text-messages or something like that is fun. But it is so much better to sit in front of each other and play the game real-time. I can enjoy this so much. The long silences while studying the situation on the chess board. The carefully over thinking the consequences of a move. I love it.

Both games we played were great games. Real challenges that needed a long time to complete… as it should with a game of chess.
I liked it that we both won one of the two games we played. The game of Friday night I won, but I really have to admit that is was a though game. Sanne’s defence were strong, her attacks clever and well thought over. Just by a trick I won. She thought I made a mistake and missed a change for her to take my queen… but it was not a mistake, but a well calculate move to would lead to make her king vulnerable and that gave me the advantage.
The game we played yesterday evening was maybe even more spectacular. Both our defences were very strong. With teases and pokes we tried to the other to provoke an attack, but none of us reacted on that. But with all this I created a small weak spot in my defence and Sanne took fully advantage of that. That was the beginning of the end :-). Very well-played!!

It is always funny how many people react when I tell them that Sanne will stay at my place while Marion is not here… and even worse, she will stay overnight here! I am pretty sure that many think that just friendship between a man and a woman is not possible when one of them is a relation with someone else. Nonsense in my opinion. Sanne and I are the proof of that. People should not always think the most bad of something.

Anyway, I had a very nice weekend with these chess games. And of course the walk with Sanne’s “Drentse patrijs” along the beach was also very nice. We agreed that we should have this kind of weekends we should have more often. And we will!
