I am on of these guys who likes to store letters and alike from long ago until present. Why? It was handy at times, but more often not. I mean, what is the use of a letter where I apply for a job 22 years ago for a company that doesn’t exist for 15 years anymore? Not much… unless you had nice memories at the job interview or something like that.

But the thing that started to annoy me more and more was this many files taken up so much physical space.

So I started a project that will take several months to fulfil… I am scanning in all the letters and I alike that I want to keep for some reason.
I will store all letters from this year and the last year directly on my laptop. On a small external 320Gb HD that I bought today all stored letters and things like that will be stored. On two other external HD I will have backup’s of everything, one in Amsterdam and one is for now in Haaksbergen.

Lots of stored letters will not scanned in and be destroyed. All the rest will be scanned in. Sure, of some documents you need the originals (as for contracts), but all of these will be just a very small pile.

And at times you find things that make you smile, as the call to be checked for Military duty…. that was 1981 :)

About laptop bags, terrabytes and mixed grills….

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

When I to my work, I always take my private laptop along with me. It is for me the way to keep in contract with all my friends who live is so many places. I don´t want to use the company equipment and Internet connection for that.

This morning while getting out of the train, it felt of suddenly as my laptop-bag that was hanging on my shoulder slipped a bit down. Which was weird. A little check showed that the strap on which the bag was hanging over my shoulder was a torn a bit at the connection point to the bag.

My decision was fast. The risk of my laptop falling was not one that I wanted to take. So today after work, I went directly to the shop centre of Hoofddorp to buy a new laptop bag.
Funny enough I bought exactly the same that I already had. And why not, I was always very happy with it and it is of the very good brand Samsonite.
The fact that the laptop bag I had was of this well known brand, makes it rather likely that I well get the bag (partly) paid back. Specially when you know that I bought the bag where my parents already were customer and Marion (and her parents) are no strangers there as well.

Well and while I was in a shopping mood, I also bought a external hard disk of 1 TerraByte. A nice fast one from Seagate. Imagibne….1 TerraByte! My very first hard disk was 20 MegaByte….

To make it all complete I had a nice mixed grill at the JR Corner in Hoofddorp. Another nice evening spend :)

Windows 7

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Already for some time I have been thinking about to install Windows 7 on my laptop. Little things kept bugging and stopped me from doing it. Things like will all program I use now work under Windows 7? Can I update from a pre-installed version of Vista Premium Home? Is my laptop strong enough for it? And more things like that…

Last Sunday when Patrick and I went to The Night of The Proms, we talked about it. And there my decision to go for it was made. I value Patrick’s opinion on this kind of matter very much… which does not mean I always agree with him :P .

So yesterday I bought a complete version of Windows 7 Home Premium. Yes, a complete version so I will not have any problems with upgrading without install CD’s of prior version and will be able to do a complete re-install later when it might be needed (and I had a sponsor for difference in price :) ).

After making the so important backups and looking at programs that I wanted to install again, I started to install Windows 7. I dropped the installation CD in to drive and booted my laptop from that CD…. and 20 minutes later I had a completed installed OS.
I have to say that I was deeply impressed. Never a complete new install of an OS went so fast… and more, all my hardware was properly recognized and all the needed drivers/software was installed. Everything worked… things as webcam, sound included. That was pretty cool.

The performance of Windows 7 is so far very good. I am happy.

Now the work of downloading (hoorrayyyy for Open Source) of all the programs I need en re-installing them. And of course putting my data-backups back.

So far I really like Windows 7….

WordPress 2.9 “Carmen”

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

This morning I have installed the latest version of WordPress on my website. For those that are unfamiliar with WordPress, this is the software that I am using for my weblog and so it is what you are looking at now :) .

Upgrading software should always be like WordPress does it. Just install the new software, run a script to modify the used databases and you’re done. Simple as that.
Most work was replacing all the used plug-inns with the latest versions. But I have to admit I have been a bit lazy on that matter lately, but now everything is up to date again.

So far as I can see now, no problems at all. Yeah, for WordPress.

This new version of WordPress has apart of course the needed security updates also a number of nice new features as a basic image editor, trash can instead of deleting things directly and more.

A big THANK YOU to the people who are making WordPress such a great product!

Aion, The Tower of Eternity (updated)

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

Most people will know that I play MMORPG’s (Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games). It all started with Ultima Online many years ago and since then quite some games passed by… games as Star Wars Gallaxies, Arsherons Call, City of Villains, Lineage II and of course the game I still play, Everquest II.

There has been for some years a new MMORPG in development and there has been many rumors and gossips about it. A week ago this new game went life. I kept a close eye on this game, but I was convinced I would never play this game… The name of this game is Aion!

… Until I noticed that many of my “gaming friends” headed to try out Aion. And that made me decide to have a look at Aion as well.

Last night I have downloaded the game and this morning I have installed it… The rumors were correct, this game is awesome. In graphics, playstyle and whatever….

The story is simple…. Good against Evil. This time I went for evil. A world that literally torn in two parts that take the fight up with each other.

As I will keep on playing Everquest II, I will never be able to train all the available character-slots. So I gave two slots away to Marion. And what have seen until now from it, she is even more fanatic with it then I am :)

I will keep you posted :)

Update: I found some nice promotion trailers about Aion… and the music with the second trailer is from VNV Nation, a band I will see this month!

Hot for Words!!!

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Some time ago I did run by confidence into a very funny site.

On the page a good looking woman explain the meaning of words. She does this on a YouTube-movie. People who visit her page can request words of which they want the explanation.
I really learned there some things. And apart from that it all is often done with a good sense of humor. It gave me some good laughs.

Here site can be found at Hot for Words. Below one of the latest movies…. Enjoy and have fun

BTW the “blondish” style in the movies are played by her. I saw once an interview with her and there it showed she was a very bright and intelligent woman.

Subscribe to comments….

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Today I have added a new functionality to my weblog here.

You can now subscribe to a thread, which means that you will be notified by mail when there is a new comment added. When you go the comments part of a post, then you will see a checkbox that you can use to subscribe to the thread. You don’t need to be logged in to use this feature, but of course you have to enter a valid mail address (which will not be visible on the weblog). You will be notified for every new comment on the thread.

This is something I would love to see on every weblog. How often do you not comment on something and only be visiting the weblog again you can see if someone replied to your comment. Many replies on comments are lost this way and that is a pitty I think. So I was very happy with this functionality and I would like to urge other weblog/blog owners to add this kind of functionality to their weblog or blog as well.

My Brute….

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Somewhere last week a colleague of mine did send me a link of an online game. The name of the game is “My Brute” and apart from selecting your opponents there is not very much you have to do (at least until now). When you win a fight, you gain experience and grow in levels, skills and also you will gain equipment.

I can have 5 fights per day.

It is a simple game… but it is fun to do….

I CHALLENGE YOU

I saw a world change….

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Last Saturday I was with Marion at the swimming pool in Haaksbergen. As normally it was very enjoyable.

When we were relaxing in the whirl pool I was listening to a song. I never heard the song before, neither I had an idea who the performing artist was. There was one line that caught my intention… “I have seen a world change”.

I realized that I indeed have seen a world changing over the last 25 year. When I mumbled something about that, Marion asked me what the heck I was talking about.

It must have been around 1982 when I got my first computer, a ZX 81. And now, June 2009, there is so much changed when we talk about computers and anything connected to it.

Many computers passed my hands is those years… Let me see, after the ZX 81 an Texas Instruments TI-99 came along. To be followed by a Comx 35/PC and an MSX home computer.
A XT 8606 with a CGA monitor was my first real PC. Followed up by a real 8Mhz AT with an EGA monitor (with 16 colors!!!). After that things went fast… a 386, a 386sx, a 486sx, a Pentium, a Pentium III… up to the Duo Core desktop and laptop that I have now.

Also I saw all kind of networks… twisted pair peer to peer networks, coax, token ring, cat based networks, fiber. All seen it, worked with all. And of when end of the 80’s the network of network came along: The Internet.

The Internet… a story apart! Who does remember things as SLIP, Gopher and DosLynx? Connecting with a 300bps modem to Amsterdam… my poor phone bill.
And nowadays it hard to imagine a world without the Internet. We use it for everything… to look up information, to book journey, to buy things, for banking… and many, many more things.

Lets have a look at the communication means that I had over the years. It all started with a 1200/75 modem (split baudrate!) for Videotext. This was replaced by a 300bps modem for visiting BBSes and for sending (echo) mail on the Fidonet. But 300bps was not that fast after some time, so a 56K modem was bought. ISDN with 128K channel (if I recall correct).
And the time of the broadwide networks arrived. First a cable connection of 4Mb. Followed by a switch to ASDL 4Mb, which was upgraded 8, 12 and 20mb now. And I am on fore eve of a fiber connection of 40mb up/down.

About the operations systems can the same story be told. Text-based CPM and MS DOS (from version 2.x up to 6.x), the first Windows versions that ran upon DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Milenium (ugh), Windows XP and Windows Vista.
SCO Unix and all kind of Linux distributions. As we are close to network OS’es, lets not forget my beloved Novell Netware.

That Wordstar was nothing that would stayed might have been clear form the beginning. But how big the surprise was that Word Perfect was wiped out by MS Word?

I could write so many ore things about everything I saw come and go in this weird world called IT.

After some talking about this all with Marion, I pulled her close in the whirl pool and said it again: “I have seen a world change!”. And we both knew that I was right.

Java

Friday, May 29th, 2009

In the last three weeks we (the developers of our company) had a Java/JBoss training of 9 days.

It was a very though training, but I learned a lot. Lets be honest, before starting this training I had only basic knowledge of Java. But during this training I really got a better insight on the Java platform and I have to say that I start to like Java more and more.

Of course this training was focused on Java and JBoss. Basically this course was about building webbased application with Java and frameworks as JBoss, Spring, Seam and so on. That sounds easy, but I can assure it is not. There are so many things related to it.

About the course it self there were good things and less things. The instructor was very good. A good sense humor and very expressive in his way of telling. I really like that.
The lunch was reasonable. The classrooms were lousy. No airco, too warm and no ventilation.

Nicest thing is that I could use my own laptop during the course. And because of that I have a very nice Java development environment installed now. Including Eclipse, Tomcat, Ant, Maven, JBoss, MySQL and Highview (and I may have forgot some :P ). And that is a nice start.

What is also is nice is that I really can start to work with Java. I have my first official Java project :) .

It was nice to have with some colleagues dinner at the Thai restaurant Bangkok. Don’t believe Anitha when she says something is not spicy at all…. it will still burn your throat away.
After the dinner those that were left over went for another beers, but for me it was really time to go home. I arrived around 23:30 home :) .
