Today someone asked me where this sudden interest in photography I have lately is coming from.
Good question. I think it is something that did grow over the last 3 years. When a bit more then 3 years ago my ex and I did split up, I lost a lot photo’s and with that many direct links to memories I had.
One of the first things I bought when I was on my own again was a digital camera. A rather simple one, a compact Canon Powershot A85. But with this camera I could make already very nice pictures. This way I was able to “capture” those moments I wanted to remember again. No matter if it was a funny moment, a beautiful view or whatever.
Later on, I started a weblog/blog. It is a nice thing to add your own made pictures. From that moment I started to care more about the quality of the pictures. But it was clear I did not know a lot about photography at all. So I wandered a road of trying, trying again and trying even more. And every now and then I was able to make a nice picture. There was a certain person that really encouraged me to continue making pictures. Thank you for that!
Slowly, but surely I started to find my way around. Now, don’t misunderstand me… I am far from an experienced photographer. I am merely a beginner who seeks his way around.
With the SLR I recently got, it all took another step forward. Surely, my SLR is not a real professional SLR, but for making the first steps in this area it is a good one. And believe me there is so much more possible, so much more options… and yes, so much more questions.
There the reason I will follow a course SLR photography next month.
At this moment, photography is for me about to capture that one moment, that one view or that one event, freeze it, save it and have it there any time I want to view it. Isn’t that not a very powerfull thought? Capture that what the eye saw? Or even more, that what the eye didn’t see!
What is more, I can even share it with others… worldwide if wanted. The Flickr-community is a wonderful example of this.
It took a long time, but now I think I can say photography turned into a new hobby and passion of mine. And that is very nice
Photography is a really beautifull and rewarding hobby.
I still have my old SLR with a wide range of lenses. I always used positive film for making slides.
It was a great hobby until someone killed it with 1 phrase….
This is one hobby i would really like to revive……..
And who or what stops you?
I once solicited for a job. I told that person passionatly about my photgraphy hobby.
He was not interested at all and he told me in a very unpleasant way that he concluded from that hobby that i was not a team player but a loner. I was flabergasted about his responce and felt even hurt by it. At that time i was very insecure about myselve and could not enjoy that hobby anymore. Over time, i forgot about my SLR
But that was a very long time ago….
Yes, I know. You told me this before…
What I meant, who or what is stopping you to take photography up as hobby again? You don’t need a SLR right away to start with it. A good compact camera is just as useful for it. I did use such a camera over 3 years as you know.
An photography being a hobby for a loner is just rubbish. I met some very interesting people by it… not only online, but also here in everyday life. And what a course I will do next month? I even dare to say that photography brings more and above all better contacts as scoccer for instance.
i do have a good digital camera. But once you have used an SLR camera, that won’t do.
You do not have the same “sight” through the lense, no controll about the sharpness using the diafrag shutter, no contol over the lighting and so on…..
As Churchill said “close, but no sigar”
People underestimate the power of the ‘normal’ digital cameras in my opinion. I’ve took photos with an Nikon Coolpix 2200 for years, but hell, you can even make beautiful pictures with that.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/14557564@N00/ -> 95% of these pictures were taken with that Nikon Coolpix 2200. Yes, even the close-ups.
I do love the control you have with an SLR, but it’s not necessary.
I have to agree with Rachel.
Sure, a SLR has more options and possibilities then a normal compact digital camera. Many I am just discovering.
But that doesn’t mean that a compact digital camera cannot make wonderful pictures. Far from that, most of the pictures I consider my best were made with my old compact camera.
And a compact camera does has a advantage over a SLR… size! I can put my compact camera in the pocket of my shirt, for my SLR I need to carry around a bag. So most of the time I have my compact with me. And only when I plan to make pictures, I take my SLR with me
