It must have been way back in 1978 or 1979, when I bought a vinyl record called “In Search of Amelia Earhart” by band called Plainsong. I still can remember exactly where I bought that record. At that time I was still going to school in the town of Eibergen. And in the town there used to be a big electronics store called Somsen. There I bought this album…
Don’t ask my why I bought this album, I have no real idea. I had not much money to spend at that time and I had never heard of the band before. I think it must have been the title of the album that had triggered me… “In Search of Amelia Earhart”.
Amelia Earhart, the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean with a plane (1932). In 1937 she and her co-pilot disappeared during an attempt to fly around the world. I use the word “disappeared” because there still unanswered questions about what really happened. Stories go from that they were captured by the Japanese army and executed for being spies… to that the plane they used was not capable for such a journey.
Anyway, I always loved the music on this album. Even so much that I basically bought the album 3 times (on vinyl, through iTunes for my iPod and the CD). And still I listen regularly to it.
I just learned that exactly this month Plainsong will be on their “Farewell tour”. As they started in 1972, it means that they have been together for 40 years and that is really a long time.
Well, I have enjoyed their music for a very long time and I am pretty sure I will listen and enjoy it for another long time…
